NFC Patches — Custom Embroidered Patches That Open a Link When Tapped

An NFC patch is a normal custom embroidered or printed patch with a small NFC chip. When a phone is held against it, the phone opens whatever the patch was programmed with – a website, an app, a contact card, a form, or emergency information. Your patch becomes and interactive brand element. No app to install, no pairing, no battery. Only the phone with NFC connection turned on. We produce custom NFC patches in Finland for businesses, teams, and organisations across the European Union, designed for:

one tap opens your link on any modern NFC-enabled phone
removable hook and loop backing – taken off before washing
every patch is programmed, verified and read-tested before shipping
produced and encoded in the EU, not imported pre-programmed

What Happens When Someone Taps the Patch?

This is the part most clients want explained in details, so here it is. The chip in the patch holds the information written. When a phone comes within a few mm, the phone reads that info and acts on it immediately. The phone does the work – the patch simply holds the information that you decided to record on it.

What we can program the patch to do:

  • Open a link or web address – your website, a product page, a booking page, a video, a PDF, a form, a review page, a Google Maps location, a WhatsApp chat, or a page inside your own system. This is the most common use by a wide margin.
  • Open your app – if your app supports deep links, the tap opens the app directly at the right screen, or sends the person to the app store if they do not have it yet.
  • Offer to save a contact – the phone shows a contact V-card with name, role, company, phone, email and website, and asks whether to save it. Useful for sales, service staff, and events.
  • Start a phone call – the dialler opens with the number already filled in. The person still presses call, so nothing happens by accident.
  • Start an email or text message – a new message opens with the address, and optionally the subject and body, already prepared.
  • Show a short piece of written information – emergency contact details, a machine reference, safety instructions, or a return-to-owner message, displayed on a simple page.
  • Open a map location – a site entrance, a venue, a meeting point.

What does not happen: nothing installs itself, nothing runs in the background, and the patch cannot read anything from the phone. The chip is passive – it has no battery and no memory of who tapped it. It only answers when a phone touches it from a few mm away.

Which Phones Can Read an NFC Patch?

Effectively all modern phones. Many phones read NFC tags automatically when the screen is on and unlocked – no app, no setting to change. Almost all Android phones sold in the EU in the last several years read them as well, with NFC switched on in settings. So, ensure the NFC is enabled.

If your audience is completely unknown – a public event, a mixed international group – we usually recommend adding a printed QR code alongside the patch, or on the packaging, pointing to the same address. The two work well together: NFC for speed and innovativeness, QR as the universal fallback.

But all Mottopatch NFC patches come with a visible NFC text on the patch, so the savvy user immediately understands what to do.

We Start With Removable Hook and Loop Patches

The current Mottopatch NFC patch line is built on hook and loop backing. The patch attaches to a loop panel on the garment and is removed before the garment goes into the washing machine. This is a design decision we recommend, not a limitation. Washing adds limitations, so please recommend your patch users the removable hook-loop patches as the default version.

  • the electronics never go through a wash cycle, a tumble dryer, or an industrial press
  • the same patch moves between jackets, vests, bags and gear without re-programming
  • a damaged or outdated patch is replaced in seconds without touching the uniform
  • the workwear itself stays washable on your normal laundry cycle

Sewn-in constructions are in development. We offer them only when we can stand behind them.

Every NFC Patch Carries a Visible NFC Mark

An NFC patch that nobody knows is tappable is a wasted patch. Each one carries a small contrast “NFC” text mark stitched into the design, so users recognise it. It is our own lettering, integrated into your layout, and we will place it where it fits your design rather than imposing a fixed position. When you see this Mottopatch mark – you can also be sure that the patches were produced, programmed and verified here in Europe.

For a first rollout we also supply a short printed onboarding card you can put in the box or hand out with the uniforms – three lines explaining what the patch does and how to tap it. Most support questions disappear when that card is present.

Chip Options

Two open NFC chip types are available now. Both are read by any modern phone with no app.

  • Option A – around 130 bytes of usable memory. That is plenty for a web address of any realistic length, which covers the large majority of business uses. This is the default and the most cost-effective option.
  • Option A+ – around 870 bytes. Chosen when the content is longer: a full contact card, several paragraphs of written information, or a long address with many tracking parameters.

One detail that matters for Nordic and German content: web addresses are compressed efficiently, but Scandinavian and German characters such as ä, ö, å and ü take two bytes each. If a patch has to carry written text in a local language rather than a link, we plan the memory accordingly and will tell you if the content needs the larger chip.

Locked or Updatable – You Choose Before Production

Once we program a patch, you decide whether the content is permanent or changeable.

  • Locked – the content is written and then permanently protected. It cannot be overwritten, wiped, or replaced by anyone. This is the right choice when you already decided on the link. the safest stable option.
  • Left updatable – the content can be rewritten later, but by you only as we cannot change the data after we shipped the patches. Suitable when the destination is expected to change and you have someone to program the patches. Be careful with this option, as other people also may change the data on your patch when needed.

There is also a third route that avoids the choice entirely: we program the patch with a short address that you control, and you re-point that address to a different destination whenever you like. The patches stay locked, and the destination still changes. This is usually the right answer for campaigns, seasonal content, and anything with a URL that is not yet final. That is an extra add-on service.

Every Patch Is Tested Before It Leaves the Workshop

Our production for NFC patches is fixed:

We do not ship blank or untested patches. The final read-test is done because that is the only test that reflects what your customer will actually experience.

What Does a Custom NFC Patch Cost?

A custom NFC patch costs on average around 25% more than the same embroidered patch without a tag. Not a separate product line with separate pricing – your patch price, plus roughly a quarter. Exact quotes are on request as always within 1 day.

That difference covers the chip itself, the programming and verification, the extra assembly step, the individual read-test, and the chip ID logging. It varies with quantity, chip type and how much content preparation the order needs, so treat 25% as an orientation figure rather than a fixed rule – the quote gives you the exact number.

Patch pricing itself depends on size, stitch density, colour count, detail level and backing, as it does for any embroidered patch. Very low prices seen elsewhere usually mean lower stitch density, simplified detail, or no consistency between reorders. We do not compete on that basis and we will tell you honestly when a design is more expensive than it needs to be. We also offer print-on-textile NFC patches for high-detail designs (typically created using ai by our customers)

Coming Next: Secure Tags and Digital Product Passports

The chips described above are open tags – anyone with a phone can read them, which is exactly what you want for a link, a contact card, or emergency information. Some uses need more than that: access credentials, ticketing, authentication, and product verification all require a tag that cannot simply be copied.

Secure tags are the next stage of this product line. They generate a fresh cryptographic signature on every tap, so a cloned tag fails verification. That work is in development and we are taking custom requests if you are interested – write us on your specific needs.

If your interest is product-level traceability and the EU Digital Product Passport requirements coming to textiles, that sits on our sister platform roportier.com, which covers QR and NFC product passport labels, hosted or self-hosted, plus a readiness audit. Care and composition labels with an integrated passport QR code are available now, from a single unit.

Reorders and Long-Term Consistency

We store the full production specification for every design: size, thread colours, stitch layout, backing type, chip type, and the content that was programmed. A reorder placed months later matches the original patches and behaves identically on tap.

For teams that grow in steps – new hires, new sites, new seasons, new events – this matters more than the first order does. Batch two should not look or behave like a different product.

Programmed in the European Union

Patches are embroidered and tags are programmed in our own workshop in Finland. Tags are sourced from EU suppliers and arrive blank – nothing is imported pre-programmed by a third party.

  • your content is written by us, in-house, and never handled by an outside encoding service
  • artwork stays inside the EU and is not subcontracted
  • predictable lead times and EU-wide delivery
  • proper EU business documentation, VAT handling and reverse charge for valid EU VAT numbers

For public sector buyers, regulated industries and defence-adjacent work, the chain of custody over programmed content is often the deciding factor rather than the price.

How to order custom NFC patches in Europe

  • Design or logo review
  • Tap content agreed – link, contact card or information
  • Order is placed & prepaid
  • Embroidery digitizing or Printing setup
  • Digital approval
  • Production, programming and read-testing
  • EU-wide shipping

First orders are usually run small – 10 to 25 patches is a normal pilot. That is enough to test the tap flow with real staff or real customers before committing to a full rollout.

Who Orders NFC Patches

NFC patches are currently used by:
  • startups and technology teams at demo days, summits and expo stands
  • security, guard and field service companies
  • sports clubs, motorcycle clubs and associations
  • event organisers and festival teams
  • clinics, gyms and membership-based businesses
  • schools, universities and student organisations
  • manufacturers adding traceability to products and equipment
  • agencies ordering on behalf of their own clients

Typical use cases include:

In each case the patch replaces something the person would otherwise have to type, carry, or remember.

  • Tap to open your site or app – on team apparel at events, so an interested visitor reaches you in one movement instead of searching for the name later
  • Tap to save a contact – staff and sales teams hand over full contact details without paper cards running out
  • Return to owner – a patch on a bag, uniform or piece of kit opens a safe contact page if the item is found
  • Safety and field identification – emergency contact, blood type or medical notes readable by any phone, locked so nobody can alter them
  • Equipment and machine reference – a patch on a cover or case opens the manual, service log or inspection form
  • Event and membership information – schedules, maps, sign-up forms and member pages reachable from the merchandise itself
  • Product authenticity and traceability – a patch that opens the product’s own page, with secure verification available as the next stage

Service area

We work with businesses across the European Union through online orders and shipping, with Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and France and other markets. International B2B projects are handled on a case-by-case basis.

What is an NFC patch?

An NFC patch is an embroidered patch with a small NFC chip. When a phone is held against it several mm, the phone opens whatever the patch was programmed with – a website, an app, a contact card or written information.

Does the user need to install an app?

No. almost all modern phones read NFC patches with no app and no setup, NFC needs to be turned on in Settings though.

Can an NFC patch be washed?

Our NFC patches use removable hook and loop backing and are taken off before washing, so the electronics never go through a wash cycle. Sewn-in washable versions are in development.

How much more does an NFC patch cost?

On average around 25% more than the same embroidered patch or printed on textile without a tag. The exact figure depends on quantity, chip type and content preparation.

Can the link be changed after the patches are made?

Yes, in two ways. The patch can be left updatable and rewritten later, or it can be locked and programmed with a short address you control and re-point whenever you like.

Is there a minimum patch size for NFC?

Plan for at least 60 mm in the smallest dimension, so the tag fits with a clear zone around it.

Can the patch read data from the phone?

No. The chip is passive, has no battery and stores no information about who tapped it. It only responds when a phone powers it from a few centimetres away.

Where are the patches programmed?

In our own workshop in Finland. Tags arrive blank from EU suppliers and are programmed, verified and read-tested in house.

What is a realistic first order?

Ten to twenty-five patches is a normal pilot, enough to test the tap flow with real users before a full rollout.
