Why patches are the right approach for bag embroidery
Direct embroidery on cotton tote bags and canvas bags technically works, but has practical limitations. The embroidery backing required on the inside of the bag creates stiff spots that are noticeable to the hand and can scratch items inside. For bags people actually use, this is a functional problem.
An applied patch eliminates this. The patch is produced on a stable woven or felt base, then applied to the bag front. The inside of the bag remains smooth. The logo on the outside stays clean, flat, and well-defined regardless of the bag fabric’s weave or texture.
- Standard front patch (default). Up to 10k stitches. Applied to the front panel of tote or backpack. Typical size 8×8cm to 12×12cm depending on bag size and logo format.
- High-detail front patch. Up to 20k stitches for complex logos, fine text, or multi-colour artwork.
- Print-on-textile patch with embroidered border. For photographic designs, full-colour brand artwork, or gradients. Cheaper than fully embroidered patch and no digitising fee. Particularly effective on tote bags where a large, visually rich patch makes a stronger impression than embroidery-only at the same size.

Note on lightweight tote bags: Tote bags under 180gsm are available at lower unit cost but are not recommended for team or brand use — the fabric is too thin to carry the weight of a patch cleanly and does not represent the brand well. We only source bags we’d be confident recommending.

Direct embroidery on cotton bags requires a backing stabiliser on the inside of the bag — this creates a stiff, rough patch on the interior that users feel when reaching into the bag and that can scratch items stored inside. An applied patch avoids this entirely: the inside of the bag stays smooth, and the logo on the outside sits clean and flat regardless of the fabric weight or weave.
220gsm+ heavy cotton is the minimum we recommend for branded team use. At this weight the bag holds its shape when carried, the handles sit properly on the shoulder, and the patch sits flat without rippling. Bags under 180gsm are available at lower cost but are not recommended — the fabric is too thin to carry a patch cleanly and the bag collapses under light loads, which undermines the brand presentation.
Standard patch size for a tote bag front is 8×8cm to 12×12cm depending on the bag dimensions and logo format. We size the patch proportionally to the bag at mockup stage. Larger patches are available for wide, landscape-format logos. We recommend based on your logo’s aspect ratio and complexity.
A drawstring bag (gym sack) is a simple single-compartment bag with cord closure — lightweight, low cost, good for sports clubs, gym giveaways, and high-quantity promotional use. A daypack is a structured two-strap backpack with multiple compartments and often a dedicated laptop sleeve — better for professional welcome kits, accelerator cohorts, and premium brand gifting where the recipient will use the bag daily.
