Hem embroidery or patch — two approaches for towel branding
Towels are one of the few items where direct embroidery on the textile is genuinely the preferred technique for many applications — specifically when the logo is placed on the woven hem border rather than directly into the terry loop pile.
- Hem border embroidery (standard for hospitality and hotel use). Logo or brand name stitched directly into the flat woven hem strip at the short end of the towel. The hem border is a woven fabric — stable, flat, and ideal for precise embroidery. This is the traditional hotel and spa approach and produces a clean, professional result that survives commercial laundry cycles. Up to approximately 20cm wide by 4cm high working area depending on hem width.
- Patch applied to towel body (for larger or more complex logos). An embroidered patch applied to the face of the towel, positioned in the lower third of the body. Better for logos with fine detail, gradients, or complex artwork that would lose definition when embroidered directly into terry loop pile. The patch sits flat and carries detail cleanly regardless of the towel’s pile height.
- Print-on-textile patch with embroidered border. For photographic logos, full-colour brand artwork, or designs with more than 6 thread colours. Applied as a patch to the towel body. No digitising fee.

The standard position for hospitality towels is the hem border — the flat woven strip at the short end of the towel. This is where the embroidery sits when the towel is folded and presented. For logos with more detail or a wider format, the patch or embroidery can be positioned on the body of the towel approximately one-third of the way up from the hem. We advise on best placement based on the logo at mockup stage.
400gsm is the standard weight for most hotel and gym applications — absorbent, durable, survives commercial laundry cycles. 500gsm+ is the premium tier used by boutique hotels, high-end spas, and properties where the towel quality is part of the brand positioning. We recommend based on your property category and laundry frequency.
Direct embroidery into terry loop pile is technically possible but produces inconsistent results — the loops interfere with stitch definition, particularly for small text and detailed logos. We use hem border embroidery for most towel orders because the woven hem strip provides a stable, flat surface that gives precise embroidery results. For complex logos or large artwork on the towel body, a patch is the better approach.
Yes. Terry cotton towels at 400gsm+ withstand standard commercial laundry at 60–90°C without significant shrinkage. Hem border embroidery is particularly durable — the stitching is locked into the stable woven hem fabric rather than the pile. We use commercial-grade thread with colourfast properties. For chlorine-based laundry systems common in hotel linen operations, we advise on thread type at quote stage.
Yes. Mixed-size orders are common — bath towels and hand towels in the same brief, or gym towels and face cloths together. Each size is quoted as a separate line item. Same logo applied consistently across all sizes.
